Volleyballers hang Tough In 3-0 Loss To St. Thomas

Mattke kill ust

It was no run-of-the-mill 3-0 loss. Hamline's volleyball team battled league leader (and No. 7 in the country) St. Thomas long and hard before giving way Wednesday night at Hutton Arena.

The Tommies (31-1 overall, 10-0 MIAC) clinched a tie for first place and home court advantage for the MIAC playoffs. But the Pipers (18-11 overall, 1-9 MIAC) put them through their paces several times along the way.

In the first set, HU dug themselves into a 21-9 role and nearly worked out of it. Hamline went on a 10-3 run but the Tommies held on for a 25-19 decision. The second set was tight early with UST creeping out to a 13-11 lead before taking a 10-2 run en route to a 25-16 verdict.

The third set followed the same pattern. The Tommies sprinted out of the gate fast at 10-4 only to see the Pipers work it back to a five point margin at 23-18. UST then recorded the final two points to end the match.

Michelle Mattke (picturted) led a balanced HU attack with six kills. Becka Mozes dealt 21 assists and Lynsey Reimer had 17 digs.

The Pipers close out the season Friday against Augsburg at Hutton Arena. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
