Homecoming, Hall Of Fame, Football On Klas Field Agenda

FB Aug game

With folks coming in for Homecoming and the annual Hall Of Fame inductions, Klas Field figures to be a lively place October 6. The HU football team hopes to make it even livelier with some offensive outbursts. the Pipers (1-3, 0-3 MIAC) host a St. Olaf team that has ideas about making noise in the MIAC race and, perhaps, in the postseason as well. Hamline hopes to do something about it with a team that shpould be a lot healthier than the one that walked off the field after a 37-0 loss at Gustavus last Saturday.

"We had some guys who needed to take it easy this week," admits head coach John Pate. "Hopefully, they will have plenty of energy on Saturday."

HU will need it. The Oles are coming off their first win in Collegeville since 1991 -- a 38-35 triumph. QB Dan Dobson is second in the league in passing yards (236.2 per game) and TDs (11).  That figures to be a test for the defense that led by John Vandenburg, who leads the MIAC with 12.5 tackles per game.

Hamline counters with two of the top nine rushers in the league. Austin Duncan (78.5 yards per game) is on pace to have the most yards on the ground by a HU back since Eric Johnson set the school record with 1,209 yards in 1996. Duncan is sixth in the MIAC and QB Kevin Ackerley (56.0) stands ninth. They will face a STO defense that has bent at times (376.4 yards per game allowed) but has surrendered only 22 points per game so far. (5th best).

If the return of their alums and having the new inductees to the school's Hall Of Fame isn't enough, maybe the return of one of their most popular players in recent years will. Andrew Viereck, who was voted the team's Most Improved Player last year, will be this week's Honorary Coach.

The Pipers will be looking to snap a 13-game losing streak against the Oles. They trail the all-time series 21-31-4.
