Monson-Deichert Go Record-Breaking 1-2 At North Central; Theisen Wins At Wis-LaCrosse

Devin Monson and Jack Deichert staged their own personal duel in the 5000 Meter race at North Central College on May 17. As a result, both are likely to get a chance to run the race next week at the NCAA Division III Championships. Monson blitzed the field in scorching time of 14:12.57 -- the fifth best recorded performance in Division III this year -- to win the race. He also broke his own school record by 17 seconds and came within two seconds of joining the Top 10 list of All-Time Division III 5000 Meters performances. The senior seemed a safe bet to advance to nationals. His previous best time of 14:29.92 set in April at Klas Field ranked him 11th.

Deichert's second place effort of 14:26.99 also would have also broken the mark Monson set last month.  But his performance moved him from 28th (and out of the running) to 10th place overall on the current charts.  Since the top 20 in each event will make the field when it is announced Sunday, the pair are expected to go again next week -- although there are many other qualifiers being held around the country.

Ellis Richardson also ran in the race, finishing seventh (14:46.12).

On the women's side,  Maria Theisen went out blazing. She conquered the field in the 1500 Meters at the Last Chance Wis-LaCrosse Invitational Thursday, finishing in a time of 4:43.29. She was one of five Pipers who were competing for a chance to go to next week's NCAA Championships at UWL. Dani Vitali ran sixth in the 3000 Meter Steeplechase (12:30.94). Ben Johnson also claimed a sixth place finish in the Triple Jump (46-0). Kaitlyn Frenchick was 10th in the 800 Meters (2:18.18). Ryan Peterson was 14th in the 1500 Meters (4:07.36).
