Softball Bats Boom In Sweep Of Knights

The Piper hitters were on parade all Wednesday afternoon at Knights Field in Northfield, whacking 30 hits. (The breakdown: 18 singles, nine doubles, two triples and a home run). Bethany Hine went 7-for-10, Cecily Abbadessa was 5-for-9 with six RBIs and Laura Randall pushed her hitting streak to 12 straight games as Hamline overran Carleton, 10-4 and 11-9 to continue a late-season surge. Hamline has won five of its last seven games to improve to 8-26 overall, 7-13 in the MIAC.

In the opener, HU started slow, trailing 3-1 after four innings. But they bunched together five hits and plated three runs in the fifth for a 4-3 that seemed to kick-start the offense. the Pipers added a pair of three-spots in the next two innings to pull away. Hine had three singles, a triple and five RBI to pace the 15 hit assault. Abbadessa knocked in three runs and Brittany Bredemus went 3-for-3 and scored three times. Lauren Clouston, who gave up just one run in 3.2 innings of relief, earned the win.

After the break between games, HU resumed the artillery attack. 11 Piper batters came to the plate in the first inning. Seven of them scored (three on Allie Ruter's first home run of the season)  to give starting pitcher Clouston a big cushion. Hamline added four more runs in later innings -- a move that proved to be necessary when the Knights rallied to get within a pair late in the fray. In fact, Carleton had the winning run on first base in the last of the seventh when Clouston recorded the final out on a grounder to save the sweep. Jackie Brigl joined the hit bombardment in this game. Her three hits matched Hine and Abbadessa. HU again put up 15 hits as the Pipers improved their team batting average a dozen points to a season high .279.

Hine is now hitting a season high .398. Randall, who had one hit in each game, is at .348. Abbadessa continues to climb at .326.

Hamline finishes up conference play -- and their Meredith Field scheduled this Saturday, April 28 with a doubleheader against Bethel. The first game will begin at 1:00 p.m.
