Softball Gets Lot Of Hits But One Run In Losses To SMU

The good news for the Piper softball team is they averaged more than a hit an inning in their home opening doubleheader against St. Mary's on a sun-kissed Tuesday afternoon. The bad news is they scored just one run and lost both games.

St. Mary's took advantage of eight HU errors and got key hits when needed to win both ends in the minimum of five innings by scores of 9-1 and 9-0.

In the first game, Jackie Brigl lined a solo homer to left field, her second of the season, to provide the lone run of the day. Brigl had two of her team's six hits. But SMU took advantage of four errors for four unearned runs to claim the verdict.

In the second game, the Cardinals won it early, scoring all of their runs in the first three innings. Bethany Hine and Lauren Turitto had two hits each and Katie Koren extended her season high hitting streak to four games as part of a seven hit offense. Hine has been on a tear the last three games. After opening MIAC play with an 0-for-9 skid, she has six hits in her last 10 at bats to raise her average to a team high .367.

HU stands 1-17 overall, 0-6 in MIAC play.

They will gave Gustavus Adolphus Thursday at Meredith Field. The doubleheader will begin at 3:30 p.m.
