Bethany Hine opened the 2012 season the way she closed out 2011 -- hitting a softball everywhere. The junior centerfielder went 5-for-6 at the plate but the Pipers' pitching couldn't control some equally hot Luther bats. The Norse, rated No. 5 in the country in the preseason NFCA poll, won the opener, 10-2 and took the nightcap, 8-0. The games were played at the Augsburg Dome.
In the opener, Hine whacked out three hits(a double and two singles) but her teammates only managed one other sally in the six-inning loss. HU came out swinging as Hine led off the season with a double. Cecily Abbadessa was hit by a pitch and Lauren Turitto walked to load the bases. Jenna Dushaw was hit by a pitch to force a run home and Jackie Brigl's ringing single brought in a second run. But the Norse clamped the door shut and kept the Pipers scoreless the rest of the way.
HU took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the third when the Norse combined five hits and two errors for six runs to take a commanding lead off losing pitcher Lauren Clouston.
In the second game, Luther scored five runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back. Hine added two more singles to her big day. Laura Randall also had two one-baggers. But that was all HU could muster. Brianna Vela was the losing pitcher.
Hamline will face Wis-LaCrosse (5-1) in a doubleheader Saturday at noon.
