Noah Aguirre was hot Saturday afternoon at Hutton Arena. Unfortunately, so were the Bethel Royals. Aguirre scored a season high 18 points but BY shot nearly 58 per cent from the field in the second half and broke away for a 76-61 men's BB decision. The loss dropped the Pipers to 9-9, a half-game behind the Royals and St. John's for the last playoff spot. Hamline is 9-9 in the MIAC (11-12 overall). BU and SJU are 9-8. Both teams play Monday while Hamline is off.
A big crowd saw an entertaining back and forth first half. A late jumper was the difference as Bethel led 33-31 at the break. However, the Royals took control early in the second half, upping the lead to 11 points midway through the period. Hamline worked it back to eight points at 67-59with 3:18 left. But that was as close as they would get.
In addition to Aguirre, Tyler Pannell connected on four three-pointers and finished with 14 points. Mike Campbell added 11 points. Campbell also continued his climb up the school's All-Time Top Ten lists. His three steals moved into ninth place on the career list with 102. He also connected on three Free Throws to move to sixth place all-time with 212.
Hamline finishes on the road at St. Mary's (Wednesday) and Macalester (Saturday).
