Christian Kicks Out 40 in OT Loss at St. Thomas

A year ago, Beau Christian stole a game for Hamline's men's hockey team with a terrific performance in a 2-1 win at St. Thomas. Christian was at it again Friday night in Mendota Heights, frustrating the Tommies with a season high 40 saves. But, as they did in Vadnais Heights a month ago in a non-conference game, UST eked out an OT goal. This time, it was Hamline who ended up on the short end of the 2-1 stick.

UST's Robby Phillipp's goal midway in the first period was the only marker of the first 54 minutes of play. Christian was busy, handling 15 shots int he first period and 13 in the second. The Pipers pecked away at Tommie goalie Drew Fielding for 19 shots in the same time frame.

In the third period, Hamline stayed patient, looking for an opportunity. It came at 14:03 when Brian Arrigoni slipped a short pass to Cam Stowers, who converted it quickly for his fourth goal of the season. Ryan McElhone drew the second assist. HU then got a great opportunity when they went on a power play with 2:07 left in regulation. But UST killed off the penalty and Phillipp scored 50 seconds into overtime to ruin the Pipers' night.

Hamline fell to 3-4-0 in the MIAC, 6-9-1 overall. They will get a chance to even the score Saturday night when the teams meet in Vadnais Heights. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
