Henning OT Goal Gives Pipers Sweep

There is an old adage in hockey that goes like this: If you don't know what else to do, shoot the puck because it might go in. Just ask Corinne Henning. Her slot shot at 3:18 of overtime was the only marker of the afternoon and gave Hamline a 1-0 victory over Marian and a sweep of their weekend series. The Pipers thus improved to 3-6-1 overall and now have their first two-game sweep in three years.

They have Nicole Jones to thank for that, too. She pitched a 31-save shutout, including stopping three in the first minute of OT while her team was shorthanded. It is her first collegiate shutout.

Coming off a three-goal third period outburst that keyed a 3-2 win on Friday, the Pipers had penalty problems in the first period that led a 12-7 deficit in shots. Jones, however, stayed firm. HU picked up the pace the next two period, holding a 10-3 edge in shot sin the second and a 16-13 margin in a freewheeling third period. HU had a power play opportunity late but couldn't score.

The Sabres then got a shot at it when Ashley Maskel went off for slashing with 12 seconds remaining in regulation time. Jones and her teammates staved off that attack.

That led to Henning who parlayed a pass from Jordan Verleye and fired a shot that went through the legs of Marian goalie Katie Bassett for the winning tally.

Hamline outshot the Sabres, 34-31, for the game but this was their only effort in the extra session. The Pipers will have three weeks to enjoy the win. Their next game is January 6 at St. Norbert's.
