The Hamline men's basketball team recorded several season highs Monday against defending NCAA Division III champ St. Thomas. They scored 77 points. Mike Campbell had a season high 20. Dior Ford and Noah Aguirre had season bests, too. They had 12 steals, tying a season best. Unfortunately, UST shot 58 per cent from the field for the game and held off a second half Piper surge for a 94-77 decision Monday night before a raucous crowd at Hutton Arena.
Hamline led 18-15 with 11:37 to play in the first half when UST went on a 34-16 streak that resulted in a 49-34 halftime lead. The bulge stretched to 20 in the second half before the Pipers began pecking away. Thanks in part to Brandon Rieg, who had his fourth straight double digit game coming off the bench (17 points), HU worked the margin to seven points with 9:27 to go at 65-58. It was still a makeable eight-point deficit at 83-75 with 2:06 to go when UST score four in a row to put the seal on it.
The Pipers are now 1-4 overall, 0-2 in the MIAC. Monday's game started a surge of four games in eight days for HU. St. Olaf visits Hutton Arena Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. game. HU heads to Moorhead Saturday for a game at Concordia and wraps up the game binge Dec. 13 against Caltech at Hutton at 5:00 p.m.
