Hamline found its three-point range in the second half but it wasn't quite enough to get out of a very deep ditch. The Pipers rallied from a 17-point deficit to get within a point before undefeated UW-Whitewater pulled away late for a 87-76 decision Sunday afternoon at Hutton Arena. Mike Campbell had 14 points while Brandon Rieg and Noah Aguirre added 13 each for HU, now 1-2 overall on the season.
The Warhawks used a 22-8 run in the final seven minutes of the first half to forge a 48-31 halftime advantage. The Pipers, however, turned things around quickly after the intermission, going on a 14-4 run in the first six minutes to cut the lead to 52-45. Rieg's second of three second half treys made it even tighter at 55-54 with 10:30 remaining in the game. But UWW scored the next six points and kept HU at bay the rest of the afternoon. They did so despite the fact the Pipers had a solid rebounding effort, finishing with a 22-21 edge. Campbell led the way with six. Dior Ford, who scored a season high 11 points, added five as did Aguirre. As they had done in the first two games of the season, HU was good at the free throw line, hitting 20 of 25 shots.
HU now plunges headfirst into the MIAC schedule Wednesday night when Gustavus Adolphus (1-1) visits Hutton Arena for a 7:30 p.m. game.
