Brown, Sammons Come Up Big In Piper Women BB Victory

Talk about making a great first impression. Je'Naya Brown and Jordan Sammons had 18 points each and Steph Pilgrim added 12 as Hamline pulled away late for a 69-59 women's basketball victory over Northwestern in their season opener at Hutton Arena.

The Pipers scored the final seven points of the game to defeat the Eagles and get coach Kerri Stockwell's second season as head coach off to a flying start. Sammons was effective early, hitting nine of 14 shots in her first collegiate game. She did so despite being saddled with four fouls midway in the second half. Brown was right behind her, connecting on six of 11 from the field, including a pair of three-pointers.

Hamline shot 49 per cent from the field for the game. Even more impressively -- in their first game after the graduation of All-American center Mary Wilkowski -- they outrebounded the Eagles, 33-25, led by Cassidy Vogt, who had half a dozen. Kara Poirier and Carly Cathey had five each.

Hamline opens MIAC play at Gustavus Adolphus November 30.
