The Piper Men's Cross Country team will have to wait a day to see if they qualify for the NCAA Division III Cross Country meet next Saturday. They finished third among 26 teams at the NCAA Central regional in Waverly, Iowa, losing out to MIAC foe St. Olaf by just 20 points for second place and an automatic berth in the national meet. (Nebraska Wesleyan finished first.) HU will find out Sunday if they are picked as an at-large team. Jack Deichert was the top Piper runner, finishing in second place. he negotiated the 8K course in 25:18, 22 seconds behind Ben Sathre of St. Thomas, the meet winner. Ellis Richardson was right behind Deichert, finishing third in a time of 25:19.3. Colin Rogers was 37th (26:21.1) with Devin Monson a close 39th (26:21.8). Chris Reisdorfer rounded out the Piper scorers, coming in 52nd (26:36.7).
By virtue of their finish, Deichert and Richardson are guaranteed individual spots in the field. The Pipers, who have been ranked first or second all year in the Central Region, are very hopeful Saturday's close finish will propel them as a team to the national at Winnecome, Wis. The NCAA will announce the at-large teams Sunday afternoon.

The Piper women finished 15th in a field of 25 teams. Sara Holland was the top Piper finisher, coming in 33rd place in a time of 23:15.5. Maria Theisen was 51st (23:46.1) while Kaitlyn Frenchick came in 94th (24:38.1). Danielle Vitali (124th, 25:08.3) and Claire Walling (123rd, 25:09.1) were the other scorers for HU. Their total of 422 points defeated four conference rivals.
