There are certainly easier ways to try to snag your first win of the season. Hamline makes a second journey to Northfield this fall. A month ago, they fell at Carleton. This time, they will face a St. Olaf team (6-1 overall, 4-1 MIAC) whose only loss was to highflying St. Thomas. Game time at Manitou Field on the Ole campus is 1:00 p.m.
Hamline (0-7, 0-5) is coming off a credible effort in a 35-15 home field loss to Concordia last Saturday. The defense held CC's burly Brett Baune below his season average for rushing. The offense produced over 200 yards itself. But the most electrifying play of the day (and perhaps the season) came in the second quarter when Damon Woods (Fy., Burnsville, Minn.) took a crossfield lateral on a kickoff return and bolted 80 yards for a touchdown. Later, Corey Touchette (Fy., Bainbridge Island, wash.) bulldozed his way for his first career TD. Alex Ferguson (Jr., Kent, Wash.) added his first career field goal.
Although banged and battered with injuries, the HU defense remained strong against the Cobbers the most of the day. They will need to be so again Saturday against an Ole team that is averaging nearly 28 points per game. CB Marc McDonald (Jr. Portland., Ore.), who leads the team in tackles with 54, and DB John-Michael Vandenberg (Jr., Bothel, Wash.), who has 52 tackles and returned a fumble 31 yards last week, will anchor the defense.
However, they are giving up 25 points per game. Connor Sathre (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn.), the team's leading rusher and passer, will again be calling signals on offense. He will be looking to try to get the Piper ground attack moving. Last week, he had season highs in completions and yardage.
