On a day when the Piper men's soccer team saluted graduating seniors, they got a good look at their future as well. Michael Murphy (So., Mahtomedi, Minn.) scored twice and Midhat Mujic (Jr., Bosnia) and Kamal Abda (Sr., Oromiya, Ethiopia) added one each as Hamline unloaded a season high in goals, defeating St. John's, 4-1, at Paterson Field. The win snapped a four-game losing streak and placed Hamline's final MIAC mark at 2-6-2.
Zach Nelson (Sr., Eagan, Minn.) recorded seven saves in goal to earn the win.
Despite the chilly conditions, it was a freewheeling game. The Johnnies, who ended up with a 16-13 edge in total shots, came out fast, jumping to a quick 6-0 edge in shots in the first 20 minutes. But the Pipers steadied themselves and slowly began to control the play. They were rewarded when Mujic nailed his first goal of the season as he opened the scoring with a successful header off a pass from Michael Ramirez (Fy., Kasson, Minn.) late in the first half.
Murphy, whose eight total shots (six of which were on goal) was one shy of the school record, opened the game up with two goals eight minutes apart in the second half. The first one came off a booming Sam Slagle (So., Appleton, Wis.) kick. the second one was a long shot that slithered through a screen into the net to make it 3-0. It was a team high 4th goal of the year for Murphy and marked the first time a men's player had scored more than one tally in a game this season.
The Johnnies spoiled Nelson's bid for a shutout with 15 minutes remaining but Abda bade a nice farewell to Paterson Field with his first goal of the season off a Slagle corner kick in the final minute of play. For Slagle, who leads the team with four assists, it was second double assist game of the year.
HU is 4-11-2 overall.
