Despite entering the tournament unseeded, Hamline tennis players David Croonquist (Sr., North Oaks, Minn.) and Robert Becker (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn.) nearly ended up playing for the Doubles title in the ITA/USTA tournament in Saint Peter, Minn. this weekend. After winning twice yesterday, the duo defeated Gustavus' Brooks Stapleton and Ryan Hallsten, 8-5, in a quarterfinal match in the morning. Unfortunately, the ride ended there with a close 8-6 loss in the semifinals.
It was the end of a busy day for Croonquist, His morning started well when he dumped Gustavus' Grant Leisner, 6-2, 6-2, in the singles quarterfinals. The 17th seed's magical run, however, stopped with a semifinal loss to St. Thomas' Brian McCarthy, 6-2, 6-3, in a match that coach Jon Henning described as "closer than the stats indicated."
