Finding Career Inspiration Abroad: Denise King

Denise King worked in sales for most of her career, but found herself ready to take on other challenges and build her skills in developing strategy and brand identity for businesses. While pursuing her Hamline MBA with a concentration in marketing, King says she was fortunate to work with committed faculty and learn from their vast academic and in-the-field expertise. She found herself challenged to learn all she could.

"I appreciate the faculty-they are subject matter experts and provide so much real-world, current information,” King said. “The mix of practical work and lecture is valuable."

King knew she wanted to focus on her interests in marketing and was eager to expand that knowledge internationally. When she applied for the Holt Fellowship and received a grant to help pay for part of her tuition and a study abroad trip, she was thrilled. King chose to study globalization and emerging markets in Vietnam. There, she and her fellow Hamline MBA students met with executives from multi-national corporations, joint ventures, foreign and domestic firms, service, manufacturing, marketing, and research companies in this dynamic economy at a critical stage of growth. She focused her research on how changes in demographics impact supply chains and the economy in an emerging market, and the impact of technology in the cross-pollination of ideas around the world.

"This experience has enriched my understanding significantly,” King said. “I am more prepared to examine strategies more carefully to understand the implications of business decisions. I also understand more clearly the financial effects of sales and marketing decisions."
