Professor Bill Wallace has been selected to receive the 2013 Exemplary Teacher Award at Hamline University given by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church. Professor Wallace was enthusiastically nominated by students and alums then, selected by a committee of local laity and clergy of United Methodist churches. Criteria for the award include excellence in teaching, civility and concern for students and colleagues, commitment to value-centered education, and service to students, the institution, and the community. The award comes with a letter of appreciation from the General Board, a certificate, and a monetary award of $500.
Chaplain Nancy Victorin-Vangerud noted that the committee recognized Professor Wallace's accomplishments across all four areas--as alums talked about Wallace's ongoing professional influence on their lives and values, and current students praised his commitment to a supportive "open-door" environment. As one student, Karina Hunt '15 wrote: "The value most evidently embodied by Bill Wallace is that of hospitality. Each Saturday morning at 9am, when the approximately 40 work study students arrive at the theater, we are greeted with warm pots of coffee and tea, juice, fruit and bagels or donuts. On the occasional times we have to work late to get something finished for a show, Bill always has dinner waiting for us. Even though we are working 8 hours on a Saturday in a high-stress setting, Bill creates an environment that fosters both an enjoyable and educational work experience. He makes sure that once we've left Hamline we have not only the skills needed to be successful at a job, but also the resources and connections to find a job in whatever field we choose."
Wallace was recognized by nominators for creating a home for the new Digital Media Arts program as well as his service to the community through opening up Anne Simley Theatre to local theaters for their own plays. As one alum Vanessa Lund '99 wrote: "Bill wouldn't solve anything for us, but more importantly, he'd help us discover the means within ourselves to solve whatever conundrum we found ourselves in. He has a big heart, an open mind, ears that listen and he offers tough love. His guidance has prepared so many people for life in the real world. We all need a little more of that." Congratulations to Professor Bill Wallace for receiving the UMC 2013 Exemplary Teacher Award at Hamline University.
