Pa Yong Xiong was named the first Alkire Fellow for her research related to Hmong Women Managers. Xiong’s research focused on factors affecting career paths of Hmong women in managerial positions.
She learned that gender, age, and cultural barriers were identified as the key factors affecting career paths. The women managers participating in the study emphasized higher education, the need to build organizational skills, and finding a mentor as key for them to overcome the factors.
Xiong used this research as a foundation for organizing the event, the Alkire Hmong Girl Scouts Empowerment Conference, which was held on Hamline’s campus on February 22, 2013. More than 30 high school girls from around the Twin Cities participated in the day long experience.
