There was an abundance of twos for the Hamline women's bb team Saturday afternoon at Bethel. Jordan Sammons had her second straight double-double game (23 points, career high 14 rebounds) and the Pipers turned in another excellent defensive effort to earn their second straight victory, 59-50 at the Robertson Center.
HU improved to 2-5 overall, 2-3 in the MIAC. Sammons had a lot of help as the Pipers grabbed the lead early and held off a second rally for the win. Je'Naya Brown had 11 points (nine in the first half) and Cassidy Vogt hit three three-point baskets and chipped in with eight rebounds.
Sammons had 10 points and 12 rebounds in Wednesday's win over Augsburg.
The Pipers played solid defense from the opening tap. The Royals matched them in that department as well for the first 12 minutes. Then Brown hit a three-pointer that opened the gate for a 15-4 that evolved into a 28-17 halftime lead.
In the second half, HU quickly made it a 16-point game at 34-18 ... only to see the home team snap back with a dozen unanswered points in a three-minute span that cut the lead to 34-30.
It rocked back and forth for a while with the margin staying between four and seven points until the Pipers kicked the defensive gears back into motion, holding the Royals to just five points in the final six minutes of play to gain the victory. The 50 points allowed was the fewest the Pipers have allowed this season.
Hamline has one more game before the holiday break. They will play at Northwestern (MN) on December 14 at 5:00 p.m.
