After seeing his team go seven periods without a goal, Hamline sophomore defenseman Joe Rubbelke (pictured) took matters into his own hands. The North St. Paul, Minn. native scored twice and assisted on a third as the Pipers skated to a 3-3 OT tie with Lake Forest Saturday night at Vadnais Heights Sports Complex.
The effort was enough to earn Rubbelke honors as the MIAC Men's Hockey Athlete Of the Week.
Although the Pipers have been struggling on offense, Rubbelke has been a solid producer. His five goals and six assists is tied for the lead in the entire MIAC, no small feat for a defenseman. He has been in on 55% of the Piper offensive production in the first ten games of the season. Despite his presence on the blueline, he also leads the team in Shots On Goal with 25.
Rubbelke and the Pipers return to conference play this weekend with a home and home series against Bethel. The teams play Friday night in Blaine at 7:00 p.m. and return to Vadnais Heights Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. engagement.
