The opening home acts were dramatic ... and successful. Now the Piper men's basketball team will find out what kind of road performers they are. Hamline bids to go 3-0 for the first time since 2002 Saturday, November 24 when they head out on a trip -- albeit a short one up Snelling Ave. -- to meet Northwestern (MN).
Game time in Roseville is 7:00 p.m.
HU improved to 2-0 Tuesday night with a 84-78 win over UW-Eau Claire. Hamline bolted to a 13-0 lead in the first 5 1/2 minutes of play and pushed it to 29-7 before the Blugolds rallied and slowly began to make a game of it. WEC briefly went ahead in the second half but the game was tied at 78 when Noah Aguirre drilled a three-pointer with 18 seconds left to break the tie for good.
The Pipers have four players who are averaging scoring in double digits in the early going. Dior Ford leads with a 19.0 per game average but he is closely followed by Aguirre (16.0), Tyler Pannell (14.5) and Ryan Welsh (11.0)
Now they face the Eagles, who stand 3-0 after wins over St. Mary's, UW-River Falls and Macalester. Wade Chitwood leads the Eagles with a 17.0 point per game average. The Grinnell, Iowa senior has been particularly good from the free throw line, having hit on 14 of 16 tries.
Last year, HU opened the season with a 64-61 home court wins over the Eagles. It's the Pipers last non-con game before opening league play against St. John's at Hutton Arena Nov. 28.
This season's 2-0 start is the best for a Piper hoop outfit since 2002 when they started 3-0. The third victim that year? Northwestern. It also would lift the Pipers to the same non-conference start as league favorite St. Thomas. (Augsburg is 2-0 and Carleton is 1-0.)
