For what is believed to be the first time ever, Hamline has two representatives on the COSIDA District 6 Academic All-America team. Ben Del Greco, a senior offensive lineman, and Derek Wilson (pictured), a junior defensive lineman, were named to the team voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Both advance to the ballot for the national team, which will be announced December 3.
Del Greco, a native of Sandstone, Minn., switched from tight end to offensive lineman last year. At 6-3, 225, he has often been outsized by opponents on the other side of the ball. But he has made up for it with tenacity and durability. One of the team captains this year, he has never missed a start due to injury. A 3.70 student who is a double major in Spanish and K-12 education, Del Greco has made the Dean's List on five occasions. He won the Ellen Drew prize for leadership and commitment to multi-cultural education and currently tutors younger students in English As a Second Language and Math.
Wilson is finishing up his second season as a regular on the defensive wall. He currently ranks fifth on the team with 34 tackles. He lead the team with three fumble recoveries and also has three sacks and six tackles for loss. Off the field, the Eagan, Minn. native has been a three-time member of the Dean's List and sports a 3.8 GPA as a double major in Economics and Business. He is a member of the team's FB Leadership Council and also made the MIAC All-Academic team last year. He, too, is a tutor, working with students in Math and Economics.
Del Greco and Wilson will be on the field this Saturday, November 10 when the Pipers wrap up the 2012 game with the battle for The Old Paint Bucket against Macalester. Game time at Klas Field is 1:00 p.m.
