Hamline coach Doc DelCastillo got the defensive effort he wanted in his first game as head coach. But the offense couldn't help out as the Pipers took a 2-0 loss to Gustavus in the opening game of the annual MIAC Hockey Showcase. Matt Hemingway was solid in goal with 28 saves. But Hamline managed just four first priod shots before warming up and recording 10 in the second and eight more in the third period.
Sheldon Taylor, a freshman, fired seven of those shots (including four in the final frame). But HU allowed goals in each of the first two periods and couldn't catch the Gusties, who won the MIAC postseason title a year ago and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals.
The Pipers return to action Sunday against Concordia in Blaine. Game time is 2:30 p.m.
