An errant bounce ruined a terrific effort by the Hamline women's soccer team at Paterson Field. Aileen Scheibner (pictured at right) scored twice in the first 13 minutes and Jordan Sammons forced overtime at the last possible mini-second. But the Scots won on an own goal 4:07 of overtime to drop the Pipers to 5-2-1 overall, 0-2-1 in the MIAC.
The day started well. Scheibner, who also had a pair in Tuesday's 3-0 win over Northwestern, found a loose ball on the right side and knocked it into an open net just 6:55 into the game. A little over six minutes later, Christine Nalepka sent a perfectly timed pass that sent Schiebner in on a breakaway to make it 2-0 for her team high seventh goal of the season.
It stayed that way through halftime but Macalester scored in the first minute of the second half to start a comeback. Mac tied it 10 minutes later and held the edge in play for the next 20 minutes or so. Then the Pipers mounted a charge that made things interesting.
With 13 seconds left in regulation, Keanna Mienert directed a corner kick that led to heavy traffic in front of the Mac goal. Hannah Plagman found the ball, fed it to Jordan Sammons, who buried it in the back of the net just before the clock hit 0:00 to send the game into OT.
The Scots had the only shots of the extra session.
Hamline returns to action Tuesday against St. Olaf at Paterson Field. Game Time is 3:30 p.m.
