It was about as smooth a transition as one can imagine. Kevin Ackerley made his debut as Hamline quarterback a day to remember when he rushed for a league-leading 166 yards and three TDs as the Pipers defeated Minnesota-Morris, 37-31, at Big Cat Stadium in Morris, September 1. The Tucson, Arizona sophomore also completed four of six passes for 79 yards, including a 51-yarder to Hoyfal Adam. For that he has been named the MIAC Offensive Player of The Week, the first Piper to be so honored since current assistant coach Tim Queck did so in 2009.
Ackerley was a QB at Sahuaro High School but was moved to defensive back last year. He returned to his old post in style. With HU trailing 14-10 in the third quarter, Ackerley scored on runs of 14 and 24 yards in the third quarter and added a 54-yarder in the fourth quarter as Hamline opened the season with a victory for the first time since 2009.
Ackerley and his teammates get a week to rest on their laurels. HU opens MIAC play September 15 at Carleton. They open MIAC play September 11 against Augsburg at Klas Field at 7:00 p.m.
