Welcome home, John Broback. Your presence is duly noted. An All-MIAC choice two years ago, Broback took a year off from football in 2011. He made an impressive return last week in Hamline's 37-31 win at Minnesota-Morris, booming five punts for a 51.2 average, tops in the country in Division III (and third among all punters) after one week of play. Broback's long kick was 63 yards. Three of his five efforts landed in the end zone for touchbacks (two of them were for 51 yards and 46 yards) and another one went out inside the 20. In addition, he averaged nearly 60 yards on kickoffs.
To add to his good day, Broback hit four extra points and a field goal as the Pipers snapped a 16-game losing streak in the win.
Broback had company on the leaderboard. QB Kevin Ackerley's 166 yards on the ground leads the MIAC and ranks ninth nationally. His three TDs is tied for the MIAC lead.
The Pipers have a week to rest on their laurels. They are off this week before playing at Carleton Sept. 15.
