New season, new names ... and new results. Hamline's volleyball team opened on a positive note August 31 with a pair of victories at the Beloit Invitational. The Pipers defeated the host school, 3-0, and then dumped Dubuque by a similar score.
In the season opener, HU won the first game, 25-17 and topped that with 25-7 and 25-14 wins in the next two games. Katie Ayres and Stephanie Kaup led the offense with seven kills each. Sammie Miller and Becca Mozes added 12 assists each. The Pipers were sharp on the attack, finishing with an excellent .400 hitting percentage and just five errors out of 65 tries.
The Pipers were tested against UD. They fought their way to a 29-27 win in Game 1. Game 2 went better -- a 25-12 win. The wrapup game was tighter but HU prevailed, 25-22. The Miller twins had 37 digs between them (Frankie had 20 and Sammie had 17). Sammie kicked in 22 assists as well. Mackenzie Remick had 15 kills and Ayres finished off a great first day as a collegian with 11. As they wer ein the lidlifter, the Pipers were sharp on the attack, finishing with 13 errors.
HU, now 2-0 on the season, had a pair of matches September 1 in Beloit. They will face Marian at 10:30 a.m. and then meet NAIA foe William Penn at 2 p.m.
