Hamline University School of Law has been named one of America’s 20 “Most Innovative Law Schools” in preLaw Magazine’s back to school issue.

The article highlights Hamline Law as a leader in taking advantage of new technology, pointing out the incorporation of iPads for the general healthcare, healthcare compliance, and international business negotiation certificates. By leveraging the power of the iPad, Hamline Law has created a distance learning experience for certificate students that delivers more than mere convenience.

“Equipping each student in our International Business Negotiation certificate program with an iPad -- and an app that we developed specifically for it -- has created a much richer real-world experience,” said Hamline Law Professor Sharon Press, director of Hamline’s Dispute Resolution Institute. “Each iPad is fully loaded with the class readings and gives students access to video and other Internet content making it both convenient and effective. Even more important is that Apple’s chat and FaceTime features enable students to interact from anywhere in the world, which is an essential part of the course.”

A new proprietary iPad app has since been developed to deliver Hamline’s Health Law Institute’s highly regarded Health Care Compliance certificate program to professionals who, because of geography, haven’t been able to access the program before. And Professor Press’s International Business Negotiation program has been expanded to include a cohort of students in Hong Kong who will be interacting -- via iPad -- with their classmates on Hamline’s Saint Paul, Minnesota campus.

“Our goal was to produce an experience that would combine traditional face-to-face with a technology that truly enhances the ways students interact with the curriculum, their teachers and each other,” Hamline Law Dean Donald M. Lewis said. “What we we’ve learned in these successful certificate programs will inform how we use technology to enhance other offerings, including our J.D. programs.”
