A year ago, the Piper women's soccer team was in contention for a playoff spot until the final days of the season. They finished with 10 wins (tying a school record) and a plus .500 mark in league play for the first time ever. Helped by frosh Aileen Scheibner (pictured at right), they led the league in scoring with 37 goals.
The MIAC coaches, however, aren't sure history will repeat itself. Despite returning nine of their top 12 scorers from 2011, Hamline is picked to finish in eighth place in the annual preseason poll. Head coach Ted Zingman, starting his sixth season on the sidelines, currently anticipates having just five new faces on his 2012 roster. The Pipers open their season with three of four non-conference games away from Paterson Field, starting with Minnesota-Morris September 1. The home opener is September 5 against Wis-River Falls.
As luck would have it, HU will get an idea out of the chute about what it will take to battle for a playoff berth. The MIAC opener is September 12 at preseason favorite Concordia.
