It's probably not the way first year HU men's soccer coach Alex Morawiecki (seen here working with Eric Feil, a goalie candidate) would have preferred it. But you go with the cards you are dealt. So it is the 2006 Piper alum starts his first campaign as head coach on a two-fold mission:
1) He is quickly getting up-to-speed on what his new charges can do.
2) While learning that, he also has to prepare them for a rugged opening to the season August 31-September 1 when a pair of top West Coast teams invade Paterson Field. More on that later.
For now, Morawiecki and his staff are working on mixing and matching combinations. 13 players return from 2011 when the Pipers worked out at Paterson Field for the first time August 18. Morawiecki, who spent five days with his team in spring drills, says he enters training camp with no pre-set plans on who will line up where when the Pipers face Pacific Lutheran (rated No. 25 in Division III) on August 31 at 3:30 p.m. (Whitworth, which is playing Augsburg earlier that day at Paterson, will test HU the next day, also at 3:30 p.m.)
Despite the short period for introductions and drills, Morawiecki is encouraged by what he is seeing. “They’re all ears," he said. "They’re hungry to learn how to make 4-11 turn into 11-4.
That’s a great starting point.”
