If Hamline’s
women’s track and field team are going to improve on last year’s fifth place
finish this weekend at the MIAC Outdoor Championships in Moorhead, they are going to have rely on the Killer B’s and as well as some Super
S’s to continue their strong efforts in the field.
Becky Culp and Brenna Coyle have been dazzling them all year in the field. Culp
enters this weekend’s meet at Moorhead with the top effort this season in the
Discus and the Shot Put as well as the fourth best Hammer Throw of the spring. Culp was second in the Discus last year. Her
top throw this year of 144-0 is 15 feet farther than her 2011 effort in the conference
meet and ranks 10th in the country. Her 45 5 ¾ work in the Shot Put is
nearly six feet better than last year when she finished fifth in the event and is 14th best.
Coyle set a
MIAC Meet record last year when she won the Hammer, going 171-5. She has thrown
nearly two feet farther this year 9173-2), an effort that is currently seventh best among all D-III pitchers.
First year
thrower Shawny Kramer has also been
impressive, currently ranking right behind Coyle in the Hammer (164-4) and
sixth in the Discus. Kramer is one of the freshmen to crack the USTFCCCA leaderboard, checking in at 18th place overall. Her fellow surname Stephanie
Jenkins also adds depth to the Pipers at the Pole Vault, where her 11-0 ¼ leap is
the second best MIAC mark this spring.
The Pipers' top running hope may be sophomore Maria Theisen, whose 2:15.48 clocking in the 800 Meters is the
third best of the spring in the league.
A year ago, she ran seventh in the 1500 Meters. In 2012, she has chopped
15 seconds off the old time and also stands third in that event as well.. Two other runners who may be
ready to move up from their current sixth place standing are Heather Hollinger in the 5,000 Meters
and Kaitlyn Frenchick, whose 66.96
time in the 400 Meter Hurdles is a mere four seconds off the top effort this spring.
The Pipers enter
the meet ahead of last year’s pace in one respect. Last weekend in Northfield, Adrianna Acosta and Keelie Sorensen finished 6-7 in the
Hepathlon. A year ago, Hamline did not have a competitor in this race.
