Softball Finishes MIAC Play On Upswing

They won in two very different fashions. But they won the games ... and that is what counts the most. The Piper softball team continued its late surge with a 13-9 and 3-2 wins over Bethel at Meredith Field Sunday. Hu finished the MIAC season with a four-game winning streak and triumphs in seven of their last nine games. The final league mark of 9-13 belies how well the team has hit and fielded in the last three weeks.

Despite giving up 17 hits, HU was in command most of the way in game 1. The Royals scored twice in the top of the first but Cecily Abbadessa's two run homer in the bottom of the inning have HU a 3-2 lead. Laura Randall slapped her second double of the game as the big blow in a four-run second that made it 7-2. The Pipers added two in the fourth and a run in the fifth and nearly ended the affair early when Brittany Bredemus unloaded a bases-loaded double to make it 13-6 in the sixth inning. it capped a big week for Bredemus, who went 8-for-13 in three starts and upper her batting average to a season high .313.

BU pushed back in the seventh before Bri Vela relieved starter Lauren Clouston to earn her first save of the year. Randall went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI and Bethany Hine  was 3-for-5 with three runs scored to pace a 14-hit assault.

By contrast, the finale was a tame affair. The Royals again went first, plating a pair of second inning runs, one of which was unearned. HU responded in the fourth on back-to-back RBi singles by Elaina Hammann and Cassie Lopez. The game stayed stuck at 2 until the sixth. With one out, Allie Ruter walked. Hammann forced her at second but then stole the base. Lopez followed with another single to score Hamman. Vela pitched perhaps her best game of the year, a complete game four-hitter (2 BB, 4 K) to secure the sweep. Randall had a fifth inning single to stretch her hitting streak to 14 games.

HU is now 10-26 overall. they finish the season May 1 with a doubleheader at Wisconsin-Stout.
