Randall Has Big Day At Plate For Pipers In Double Loss To Auggies

It didn't seem like a day where they would be a lot of hitting. Temps were in the 50s. The wind was blowing. Meredith Field was wet from the heavy rains of the day before. But Augsburg and Hamline combined for 44 hits in a lively doubleheader that saw HU's Laura Randall go 5-for-7. But it wasn't enough as the Pipers staged several impressive rallies only to drop both ends of the twinbill, 9-6, and 5-4.

In the opener, Augsburg jumped to a 3-0 only to see HU score twice in the third inning and four more in the fourth. Jenna Dushaw's two-RBI double was the big blow in the third. In the fourth, four consecutive run-scoring hits (including a ringing Randall double to right center) pushed the Pipers to a 6-3 lead. But the Auggies rallied for a run in the fifth and five more in the sixth to take the decision. Five Hamline errors opened the door for eight unearned runs.

In Game 2, Hamline scored twice in the second to erase an 1-0 Augsburg lead. Dushaw singled and rose home on Lauren Clouston's triple. Brittany Bredemus, who had two hits and  a RB\I in the opener, then knocked home a second run with a single. The next inning, Randall singled and eventually scored on Karie Koren's bunt single.

The visitors went back ahead 4-3 but HU came back in the sixth to tie the game when Lauren Turitto doubled and scored on Koren's grounder. Augsburg scored a run in the top of the seventh to earn the win.

In addition to Randall (who has a 10-game hitting streak and is now batting .357) and Bredemus, Cecily Abbadessa had a good day at the plate, going 4-for-8 to improve her batting mark to .300.

Hamline fell to 6-26 overall, 5-13 in the MIAC. They play at Carleton Wednesday and return home for their Meredith Field finale April 28 against Bethel at 1:00 p.m.
