Hamline's softball team did not go gently into the afternoon against a hard-hitting Gustavus Adolphus team. HU did lose both games of the Meredith Field doubleheader by the same score: 8-3. But the scores don't tell all the story.
For example: In Game 1, GAC came out swinging, scoring five runs before the Pipers even got to bat. Such an outburst would daunt many teams. But the Pipers settled down and allowed just two runs in the next three innings. Bethany Hine then hammered her first home run of the season to make it 7-3. Before the game was done, Hine would have another hit. (Cecily Abbadessa also had two). The Gusties claimed the game but the Pipers proved they could hang tough.
That resilience came in handy in the nightcap. Gustavus led, 2-0, in the fourth when Jenna Dushaw singled home a run. HU scored again in the fifth on a Katie Koren single. Gustavus untied the game in the top of the 6th but Dushaw responded with a solo home run -- her second of the season -- to forge a 3-3 tie. GAC, however, came up with a five spot in the top of the seventh to put the game away.
Hamline fell to 1-19 overall, 0-8 in the MIAC.
The Pipers finish up a homestand with a non-conference twinbill against Wis-River Falls on Tuesday, April 10 at Meredith Field. The first game is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m.
