Softballers Nipped Twice At St. Kate's

Close but ... That was the story Saturday for Hamline's softball team. The Pipers put up a stiff front but came up just short in a pair of one-run decisions at St. Catherine's. The Wildcats rallied from a 5-1 deficit to deal the Pipers a 6-5 defeat in the opener and then held off a late rally for a 4-3 decision in the nightcap.

In game 1, Bethany Hine went 3-for-4 and Katie Koren, Lauren Clouston and Jackie Brigl had two hits apiece. Koren, who missed most of the second game of Wednesday's DH at St. Thomas after being hit in the head by a pitch, showed no cobwebs were left with a RBI triple. Brigl's solo home run in the top of the 4th extended Hamline's early lead to 5-1. But SCU scored four times in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 5. It stayed that way until the bottom of the seventh when the first two Wildcats reached base to win the game.

In the nightcap, HU received some bottom-of-the-batting order batting help as Cecily Abbadessa went 3-for-3 with a RBI and Brittany Bredemus had a pair of hits. But SCU had scoped out an early 4-1 lead and that proved to be just enough.

Hamline fell to 1-15 overall (0-4 MIAC). The Pipers will play their first home games of the season next week -- hosting St. Mary's Tuesday and Gustavus Adolphus Thursday at Meredith Field. Both doubleheaders are slated to start at 3:30 p.m.
