Softballers Drop Opening DH to St. Thomas

Brianna Vela held St.Thomas' big bats down as well as anybody has. But the Pipers couldn't take advantage of some opportunities and fell, 4-0, in the second game of  the Pipers' conference opening doubleheader Wednesday afternoon. Hamline also dropped the first game, 18-1.

Vela went close to stride for stride with UST pitching ace Kendra Bowe. She scattered nine hits and allowed only one earned run over the first five innings. The Tommies, picked to win the league title, scored solo tallies in the first two innings and two in the sixth inning to claim the verdict. Despite getting just two hits, HU had several chances to scored and ended up leaving eight runners on base.

In the opener, the home team came out blazing, scoring 16 runs in the first two innings. Hamline scored their only run in the fourth when Jackie Brigl drove home Lauren Turitto on a grounder. Hamline was held to five hits with Jenna Dushaw recording the day's lone extra base hit with a double.

HU is now 1-13 overall (0-2 MIAC). They will continue visiting their St. Paul neighbors when they head down Cleveland Avenue to play at St. Catherine's Saturday. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
