Baseball Team Picked Second In Coaches' Preseason Poll

If the MIAC coaches are correct, Saturday's conference opener doubleheader against St. Thomas is a matchup of the top two teams in the league. The Pipers, currently 8-10 overall, drew the second highest numbers of votes in the coaches poll that was released March 27. The Pipers drew one first place vote and 77 points overall, trailing only the Tommies, who garnered 87 points and eight first place votes.

The teams square off to open league play this Saturday at the Metrodome. Game time for the doubleheader is 7:00 p.m.

A year ago, the Pipers won four of five head-to-head matchups with their St. Paul neighbors. The last of those wins came on May 15 and allowed the Pipers claim the MIAC playoff crown and earn an automatic bid to their first-ever NCAA Division III tournament. The Pipers won once in their regional, finishing with a school record 29 victories. The Tommies also went as an at-large opponent.

In the coaches' poll, Hamline was placed second just ahead of St. John's. The top four teams make it to the MIAC playoffs May 11-13 in Minnetonka, Minn.
