One sure way to get your first win of the season -- hit three home runs and hold the other team to one. That formula worked for the Hamline Pipers, who went deep three times to produce a 5-3 win and a split of a non-conference doubleheader at Whittier College Saturday afternoon.
Laura Randall, Lauren Clouston and Jenna Dushaw had the honors as the Pipers avenged a 5-2 setback in the first game.
Randall got things going in the first inning with a solo shot over the center field fence. Clouston did the same to lead off the second to make it 2-0. A pair of errors led to two more runs and a sudden 4-0 lead. The Poets worked their way back to 4-3 before Dushaw launched her shot in the sixth inning to close out the scoring. Brianna Vela took charge of the rest, holding the Poets to eight hits and no walks to get the complete game win. She walked none and fanned two.
In the opener, Clouston gave up just four hits but her teammates managed just four of their own. Cecily Abbadessa knocked in a third inning run and HU added an unearned run in the fourth. But Whittier scored two runs on just one hit in the second and third innings to get the win.
Hamline is now 1-5 overall. They play at Laverne on Monday.
