Gymnastics Tunes Up For NCGA With Tight Loss To Winona State

Courtney Benson won two events, was second in two others and took another All-Around title but Winona State had a little much depth and eked out a 179.625-179.375 decision over Hamline in the regular season finale for both teams. Benson won the Balance Beam and Floor competitions, finishing runner up on the Uneven Parallel Bars and Vault. Rebekah Smith had a solid third on the Bars while Summer Haag came in fourth on the Vault and fifth on the Balance Beam.

The Pipers beat out the Warriors on the beam by 1,275 points but lost by a similar margin on the Bars. WSU won the match on the basis of slightly better scores in the other two events. Still, coach Doug Byrnes was satisfied his team is "as ready as it can be" for the NCGA Regionals next weekend in Eau Claire, Wis.
