Pipers Fall At St. John's, 4-1

There's an old adage in sports -- "It's not who you play. It's when you play them."  The Piper hockey team ruefully found this out Thursday night in a 4-1 loss to St. John's in St. Cloud. The Johnnies have won four games in a row and have moved into a tie for second place with a 5-4 mark. The Pipers, the defending champs, fell to 4-6-1 in the MIAC (7-11-2 overall).

The night started well for HU. Tyler Johnson scored his first of the season (with assists from Andrew Herbert and Austin Cihak) just 2:08 into the game. The Johnnies, however, tied the game three minutes later. It stayed that way until SJU broke the tie with 6:32 left. They added an empty net goal and a late tally to finish the scoring.

HU goalie Beau Christian was busy all night, kicking away 35 shots. Christian was particularly sharp in the second period when he batted away all 17 attempts sent his way.

Hamline will get a chance to even the score Friday night when the teams reconvene in Vadnais Heights. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
