Piper Bench Stands Out In 89-73 Loss At St. Thomas

On a night when the Piper starters struggled, their bench depth nearly saved the day. Brandon Rieg and Al Tillman both came off the bench to score 17 points but St. Thomas had enough to deal the Pipers a 89-73 setback Wednesday night. Tyler Pannell added 10 points. Hamline is now 10-8 overall, 8-5 in conference play.

The rugged game featured 46 fouls between the two teams, including four technicals. Led by Tillman and Rieg, HU broke away from an early 5-5 tie to go on a 9-3 run for an 14-8 lead. UST came back to make it 30-23 with 7:21 left in the half. The seven point margin was still there at halftime as UST led 43-36. The Tommies sprinted to a 13-point advantage early in the second half only to see the Pipers work it back to 52-57 with 10:37 remaining. However, that was close as HU would be able to get.

Hamline shot 41 per cent from the field for the game. They were a solid 21-26 from the Free Throw Line.

The Pipers are off until Monday when they play at St. Olaf. The Oles are currently half a game ahead of Hamline for fourth place in the loop.
