Pipers Get Key MBB Win At Augsburg

It was the sort of game when a coach is looking for his top guys to come through in the clutch. And Hamline mens BB coach Nelson Whitmore got his wish big time. Mike Campbell scored 18 points and added five rebounds and four steals as the Pipers gained a crucial road victory, 83-77, at Augsburg Monday night. Hamline has won five of its last six games to improve to 8-4 in the MIAC (10-7 overall). They are in fourth place but a mere half-game behind the Auggies and Gustavus.

Campbell, the team's leading scorer, was perfect from the Free Throw line, going 10-for-10. He got help from Tyler Pannell, who chipped in with 13 points. As has been the case in this streak, the Piper bench came through with key contributions. Al Tillman had 14 points while Brandon Rieg added 11. Victor Easter came up with five rebounds.

HU took control of the game early. Pannell hit a three-pointer for Hamline's first points of the night for a 3-2 lead. They never trailed again. HU stretched the lead to 13 in the first half before a late Auggie rally cut the margin to 35-31 at intermission. In the second half, Hamline came out of the locker room running and gunning, taking a 15-point lead with 10 minutes left. But the Auggie began to rally and it was suddenly 74-71 with 1:15 left. Dior Ford then nailed a dunk and Campbell converted a pair of free throws to make it 78-74 and Hamline had enough points to secure the key road win.

The Pipers shot 51.7 percent in the second half and finished the night with a 48.3 percentage. In addition, they forced the Auggies into 21 turnovers, recording 13 steals.

Hamline finishes a tough stretch of five games in 10 days Wednesday night when they visit league leader St. Thomas (9-2). Game time there is 7:30 p.m.
