Rough Start Does In Men's Hockey, 5-2

A 3-0 first period hold proved a bit hard to handle for the Piper men's hockey team Friday night. Zach Johnson and Cory Belisle provided second period goals 3 1/2 minutes apart but that was all the offense HU could muster in a 5-2 loss to Bethel Friday night at Vadnais Sports Center.

The Royals pressed early, scoring twice in the game's first 70 seconds. The Pipers righted themselves a bit and only allowed one more marker the rest of the frame. Matt Hemingway replaced Beau Christian in goal at the start of the second period and surrendered a fourth goal before Hamline started a comeback. Johnson scored his fourth of the year on a feed from Troy Hesketh at 13:15. Belisle's power play marker at 16:40 gave rise to comeback hopes but BU dashed them with a goal four minutes into the final frame. Hemingway stopped 19 shots in his longest stint of the season. Christian, who recorded 11 saves in that opening period, got saddled with the loss.

The defending conference champs are now 5-4-0 overall, 3-2-0 in the MIAC. They will get a chance to even the score Saturday night when they travel to Blaine for a rematch. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
