Northfield Ice Arena has long been known as a very unfriendly place for visitors to play. On Friday night, HU coach Scott Steffen found out just unfriendly it really can be. HU fell into an early hole and couldn't get out all night, suffering a 4-0 loss to a St. Olaf team that suddenly finds itself in second place, one point out of the top spot in the MIAC.
The Pipers actually outshot the Oles, 26-25 but were unable to solve goalie Ben Leis all night. Meanwhile, Beau Christian recorded 21 saves in the Hamline net. Brian Arrigoni was the Pipers' top marksman with four shots on goal.
St. Olaf led 2-0 after one period and pushed it to 3-0 after two frames. In the third, HU outshot their hosts, 10-6, to no avail. As a result, the defending league champs dropped their first conference games of the season and now stand 2-1 in the MIAC, 4-3 overall.
They won't have to wait long to avenge this game. The same teams meet Saturday night at the Pipers' new home lair, Vadnais Heights Sports Complex. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
