Fortunately for the Hamline women's hockey team, history did not repeat itself. As they did Friday, the Pipers gave up a first period goal to St. Mary's. This time, however, Ashley Maskel responded with a nifty second period goal that lifted the Pipers to a 1-1 overtime tie at Drake Arena. Hamline now stands 1-2-1 overall, 0-1-1 in the MIAC.
Sarah Schneekloth kicked out 23 shots in the Piper goal. She was victimized for a first period goal but stiffened after that and was impossible to solve the rest of the way. It was still 1-0 midway in the second period when Maskel picked off an errant pass and whistled a shot in from the slot for her first goal of the season. Schneekloth had 11 saves and was particularly sharp in the frame as the Pipers killed off a pair of penalties.
HU nearly won it in the third period, firing 12 shots on goal to no avail. The Cardinals held a slight 2-1 edge in shot in the extra session but Hamline ended up with the edge for the game by a 27-23 margin.
The Pipers will play their first game at Warner Coliseum -- their regular home ice -- next Friday, November 18 against St. Olaf. Game time is 7:00 p.m. the team will face off in Northfield on Saturday night.
