Campbell Scores 30 But Men's BB Loses Exhibition Opener

Fans who attend Hamline's men's basketball games better plan oncoming early and staying late. If Saturday's exhibition opener is any indication, the Hutton Arena scoreboard is going to get a workout this year. Four players were in double figures as the Pipers dropped a wild exhibition opener to Lakehead University, 98-95, Saturday night.

Mike Campbell led the way with 30 points. But he wasn't alone in finding offense. Brandon Rieg came off the bench to add 13 points. Tyler Pannell had 12 and Victor Easter added 10 in a game that featured 142 field goal attempts (41 from three-point range) between the two teams.

The Pipers jumped to a quick 11-0 lead but, due in part to 39 per cent shooting, trailed 44-41 at the half. They lit it up in the second with a scorching 56 per cent from the field but the Thunderwolves, playing their eighth games, had enough answers. HU had a chance to send the game into overtime but Noah Aguirre's last-ditch 3 point effort fell just short.

Hamline will play a second exhibition game Thursday night against Division II Minnesota-Crookston at Hutton Arena. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
