Pipers Host Cobbers For Homecoming 2011

It's a chance to see what, if things go right, the future may hold for Hamline University's football program. And it's a big challenge at that. The Pipers will look for their first win of the season Saturday when they welcome Concordia to Klas Field for a 1:00 p.m. start. The game can be seen on a webcast on this website with Mike Peden calling the action starting at 12:50 p.m.

HU coach John Pate is hoping the return of some of his walking wounded will help spur his team to its first victory of the season.  The speedy Tim Queck, who missed last week's game at St. Thomas, is scheduled to return to the offensive lineup and likely will also run back kicks. He is the team leader is overall yardage. QB Connor Sathre, the team's leading rusher who missed part of the UST game when he was injured trying to make a tackle, is also ready to go full tilt. While some other injuries have forced Pate and his staff to move some players into new positions, the coach sees the moves as a potential positive. "We're finding out who can play where," he said. "We haven't lacked for effort all season. We just need to avoid having the big breakdowns."

The Cobbers come to town with a 5-2 record (3-2 in the MIAC). Their two losses were to St. John's (in OT) and the undefeated Tommies. But they play the kind of style Pate envisions for his team. "They run the ball well and they have a very good QB," he said, referring to FB Brett Baune and signalcaller Michael Dunham. To offset that, HU is hoping to force more turnovers, such as they did in the second half last week at St. Thomas. The Tommies threw the ball 17 times in the second half but only managed seven points. HU ended the game with a season high three interceptions.

John-Michael Vandenberg leads the defense with 48 tackles. Marc McDonald is close behind with 46 tackles.

Following this game, HU heads on the road for a pair of difficult assignments, facing a pair of team with just one loss each -- at St. Olaf next Saturday and at Bethel November 5. They return to Klas Field to finish the season November 12 against St. John's.
