The Pipers drew first blood but Gustavus Adolphus rallied for a 2-1 men's soccer decision in Saint Peter Wednesday afternoon. Sam Slagle (So., Appleton, Wis.) gave the Pipers a lead just 6:07 when he nailed his second goal of the season off a free kick. The Gusties, who are rated No. 10 in the d3soccer.com poll and No. 13 in the NSCAA poll, however, came back for two goals before halftime and held on for the decision.
The game got off to an unusual start when it had to be moved to a practice field due to rain.
Spencer Von Behren (Jr., Bloomington, MN) was superb in goal for HU, tying a career high with a dozen saves. "Our team showed tremendous resiliency, heart and commitment today amongst a tremendous amount of adversity," said head coach Jon Lowery. " We started well, scored first and played well for large portions of the match. While disappointed with the result, I couldn't be prouder of our young team and look forward to the challenge of going to Carleton Saturday."
The Pipers face the Knights, who are currently tied with Gustavus for first place in the MIAC, Saturday at 1:00 p.m. They return home to meet Crown in a non-conference match Oct. 18. Game time at Paterson Field is 3:30 p.m.
