Big Second Quarter Costs HU, 37-0

Hamline's football team spent most of the first half on even footing with visiting Gustavus.  But the visitors suddenly broke through with three touchdowns in a span of four minutes in the second quarter and rode off to a 37-0 victory at Klas Field Saturday.

Connor Sathre (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn.) passed for 71 yards and rushed for 40 to lead Hamline's 169-yard offensive output. Tim Queck (Sr., Annandale, Minn.) was a threat all day returning kicks, taking back five for 95 yards, finishing with 125 all-purpose yards.

But Jeffrey Dubose rushed for two scores and caught a pass for a third one as Gustavus jumped to a 30-0 halftime lead and never looked back.

The Pipers got off to a good start when Olajuwan Stiffler (So., Troutdale, Ore.) forced a fumble on the game's second play and it was recovered by Guelord Mpaghize (Jr. Rochester, Minn.) at the GAC 45. HU got as far as the GAC 30 before being turned back. The Gusties led 7-0 in the second quarter when they went on a scoring spree, taking advantage of a fumble recovery and poor field position to ring up three quick TD and a 27-0 lead. It was 30-0 at halftime.

The Pipers had a good fourth quarter drive only to get stopped on 4th and 1 at the GAC 14.

Hamline is now 0-5 overall, 0-3 in the MIAC. They travel to undefeated St. Thomas next Saturday. Game time is 1:10 p.m.
